The Art of John Canemaker: An Animator’s Garden

Description

Step into the vibrant world of The Art of John Canemaker – An Animator’s Garden, a visually stunning memoir from Academy Award®–winning filmmaker and animation historian John Canemaker.

From his turbulent childhood in upstate New York to an acclaimed career as actor, animator, scholar, and painter, Canemaker’s journey spans more than fifty years of creative reinvention. At its heart is the story of a garden—a living, ever-changing muse cultivated with his husband, Joseph Kennedy, that blossomed into luminous paintings and the lyrical animated short Bridgehampton.

Filled with full-color artwork, behind-the-scenes insights, and reflections on art, nature, and resilience, this book celebrates the transformative power of creativity and the quiet beauty that blooms when we nurture both soil and spirit.

• “If you’re not fortunate enough to know John Canemaker personally, this beautiful book will open a window to his worldview and his talent. The components of a garden fire his creative juices—and we are the lucky beneficiaries.”

–LEONARD MALTIN, film historian/critic, author

• “Like the animation he studied and created, these vivid, lyrical paintings go beyond representation to capture the warmth, color, and quiet joy of an afternoon spent in the garden.”

–PETE DOCTER, director of Monsters, Inc., Up, Inside Out, Soul

• “I love this book!! John Canemaker, legendary animation historian and educator, published author of immensely accessible books on figures like Winsor McCay, Mary Blair, and Joe Ranft, now has a book that welcomes us into John’s own lushly painted celebration of his New York garden. These vibrant watercolors and gouaches capture a vibrant retreat that will lift your spirits, and prompt joy and envy in equal measures.”
